They’re Once…Twice…Three Times the Ladies
A single mother with little family to rely on has become more and more common throughout almost every community in the United States. But how about the single mothers who have two kids, or maybe even three…the odds are stacked against them.
Don’t tell that to Pembroke resident Lillian Morgan. Lillian found out she was pregnant in the fall of 1990. She knew, as a single mother it would not be easy raising a child on her own, but she knew she would do whatever she had to do to raise her child to be a successful and contributing member of the community she is a native of.
But, four months later, Lillian was told that her duty as a mother was going to double. After a sonogram, the doctor told her that she would be having twins. That kind of news is enough to send a mother, and father, into a frantic frenzy of preparations and major life adjustment. Lillian was surprised she was having twins, but was no stranger to twins…there were twins in her family.
“I guess you have to look carefully at the situation you’re in,” says Lillian. “You ask for strength, through God, which is naturally because that is where your strength comes from. When I know something has to be done or taken care of, I dive right in and do what I have to do. It doesn’t matter how hard it gets sometimes, you just deal with it and go with what you know is right.”
Upon her second visit for a sonogram, Lillian’s world was rocked an unbelievable third time. The doctor informed her she would be having TRIPLETS!
On July 24, 1991 triplets Amber, Tosca and Sasha were born, each one minute apart.
Fast forward 17 years later, the triplets are now seniors at Bryan County High School and their story of togetherness is nothing short of amazing. Take for instance their class rankings. Out of the 123 seniors at Bryan County High, the girls are academically ranked second (Amber), third (Sasha)and fourth (Tosca), and they are poised to attend college next fall.
They are individuals, each with their own personality.
Being outgoing, serious and creative, the trio recently garnered the attention of a local television station. Nominated by their teachers for their commitment not only in the classroom, but to their community as upstanding citizens who strive to make a difference, they were selected as WTOC’s Top Teen.
“We motivate each other to be the best we can be,” said Amber. “We really enjoy going to school and volunteering in the community.”
In fact, finding the time and managing a busy schedule seems to be yet another impressive attribute on the trio’s long list of accomplishments. If there is a club or organization, they are more than likely an officer or somehow affiliated.
As 4-H members since the fifth grade, the three have participated in all 4-H activities and programs. “They never say no to anything,” says Shanna Davis, Bryan County 4-H Extension Agent. “They are always willing and eager to help out and participate in anything that has to do with their community.”
Not to be left in the large shadow the trio inadvertently casts, is their younger brother, Christopher, who is also very committed to the 4-H program. According to Davis, Christopher is as committed to the program as his sisters, and is starting to shape himself as a captivating speaker.
Barbara Dubose, office manager for the extension office, has known the Morgan children for eight years. “They are the most courteous and polite children you will ever find,” said Dubose. “Their mother has been very intent on her children being involved with the community. She has done an outstanding job raising them. They are everything you would want your children to be.”
Back at school, the trio is involved in numerous clubs including; Science Club, Year Book Staff, Beta Club, Student Council and the school newspaper the Bryan County High School News. They also attend AP classes in literature and psychology.
When they are not in school, they are teenagers who enjoy the ordinary average things teenagers do. They love many different genre’s of music, and they enjoy hanging out with friends and shopping. When homework is done, they indulge in the television program Project Runway and, of course, VH1.
On Wednesdays and Sundays they attend the church they were baptized in, The First Baptist Church of Pembroke.
As with anything in life there are advantages and disadvantages to everything, however, the trio is adamant about the good clearly out-weighing the bad. “I think the only thing not good about being a triplet is being confused with each,” says Tosca. “We look alike though so its just something we deal with.”
What’s their favorite thing about being triplets? “You are never lonely,” says Sasha. “You always have someone to talk to.”
They are thankful every day for their time together, and they know they owe it to the most influential people in their lives. “Our mom and Aunt Glenda have worked very hard to make things easier for us,” said the trio in almost perfect unison. “Many of the things we have been able to accomplish is because they (mom and aunt) have sacrificed a lot.”
Eventually, the bittersweet day will come when the triplets leave for college. “It will feel empty without them around here,” said their mother Lillian. “But it will also be rewarding to see them achieving what they have set out to do.”
Currently, the trio are in the process of applying to the University of Georgia, where it sounds like their tight bond will continue. All three want to attend UGA’s College of Pharmacy.
